This week we are acknowledging a very important part of law enforcement - the animal officers who serve and protect in departments across the Delmarva Peninsula. Here is part 2 which features four canines and their agencies.

About: the "K-9 Unit provides enhanced institutional security and a drug interdiction capability. The K-9 training regimen includes on-going proficiency training, narcotic drug detection, offender disturbance control, perimeter security, evidence collection, escapee apprehension and crowd control, as well as basic training. Upon completion of training, teams are certified at the Police Dog I standard under guidelines established by the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA)." Four-Footed Officers of Delmarva (Maryland and Delaware) Part I

Introducing the patrol partners on four feet (or hooves) from the Delmarva area ~ highlighting dogs, horses and even a cat. There are four parts to this series (see links below) and on this first post we will be featuring K9 Hank (Salisbury PD), K9 Emmy (Dorchester County Sheriff's Office), overview of the working dogs at the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, and horses from the New Castle County Mounted Patrol Unit.

In 2015 K9 Line of Duty Deaths rose to the highest number since 2000. The number of police dogs which died in 2015 as listed on the Officer Down Memorial Page stands at 26. So far in 2016 there have been 6 police dogs added to that page. Source: https://www.odmp.org
