Deputy First Class Matt Medley, Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office

Tuesday, January 9th: posted the morning after an emotional gathering in East New Market, Maryland.

So many people came out last night, worked all day to prep an event on such short notice, stood in the cold for an hour and a half. I believe every single one of them would have rather "been bothered" by a friend who needed to vent, take a walk to unload their mind, go grab coffee and let out what was troubling them. "I don't want to bother you" might be the downed tree in the roadway of life, because it keeps us from facing the ugly, the bad things, the stuff that hurts our heart; maybe we toss obstacles in our own way of healing and recovery and coping. Sometimes too, maybe we just don't know how to let the sadness bubble up to the surface or put words to our pain. Last night there was sadness running down the faces of what looked like some pretty tough guys and gals, because they cared so much for someone that it didn't matter what anyone else thought. A couple of folks got up to speak and choked on their words, had to take a minute or fumbled through their tears.....and often, someone else would come stand beside them or put a hand on their shoulder. Maybe that's what we need to do more of to let others know they got us through it all.

Rest easy, DFC Medley.
