Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, Delaware State Police.

I was worried about cookies.

Cookies.

I'd lost an old recipe this holiday season, and I was running late with my usual seasonal treats; once I got home, I put my phone on the charger and immersed myself in the kitchen for several hours. Hours, it turned out, during which all hell broke loose in the northern part of our small state; hours during which one of our own Delaware people had the gun of a madman pointed and fired; hours of mayhem and panic and worst of all, the loss of our state trooper.

Cpl. Stephen Ballard, Delaware State Police • E.O.W. 4/26/17

"I didn't know you and I probably would never have met you."

Thursday, May 4th, 2017:

This past week, as our state grieved, as our officers mourned, as we began to learn about a life cut short, we now know a little bit about Cpl. Stephen Ballard. As strangers joined together at the place where his life was taken, as we gathered in the darkness on Monday night and held candles to honor his service and sacrifice, we became aware of his family and loved ones and accomplishments and dedication.

Delaware Rep. J. Benjamin "Ben" Ewing, 1931 - 2016

On Tuesday afternoon we learned that J. Benjamin Ewing of Bridgeville, Delaware had passed. Knowing that he was a former Delaware State Representative I'd heard his name but was unaware of the story and many chapters of his life. Details are still being posted and I will add his obituary here later on.

Mr. Ewing had served the 35th district in the House of Representatives from 1988 until retiring in 2008. Prior to that he retired from the Delaware State Police in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel and deputy superintendent of the force. He also served in the Marine Corp.
