As Police Week 2022 Comes to a Close....

Today was the official end to Police Week 2022. Being able to follow some of the services via YouTube or livestreamed is a great thing for those of us who cannot attend in person, but still wish to pay our respects to the fallen and the survivor families. In addition to the schedule in Washington, D.C., there were events this month which took place locally, such as memorial ceremonies and the Unity Tour riders passing through parts of Delaware and Maryland.

What is this upcoming date all about? "Thank A Police Officer Day" is a nationally observed occasion, created to show appreciation to law enforcement on the 3rd Saturday in September. Established in 2012 by the Whole Truth Project, this is the fifth year our volunteers will be visiting and thanking agencies across the Delmarva Peninsula. We invite area residents, community organizations and local businesses to join us and help us turn Delmarva Blue!

Today is National Prayers for Law Enforcement Day. While we may all be of different beliefs and faiths, one thing we are united in and that is our gratitude and love for those who wear the badge.⁣

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day 2020

I am both grateful and overwhelmed tonight while taking a look at my saved Google searches for news stories and articles relating to January 9th. To be honest, here on Delmarva I've seen little mention of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, but that could be simply because I've missed something written in support of our police. Maybe I didn't catch something that area media sources posted, or which was shared by local leaders in our community. If I did overlook anything, please, be sure to share it with us.

Thank A Police Officer Day on Delmarva: We're Looking for Community Partners

Attention Delmarva Residents and Business Owners!! Following up on the basic information which we began distributing several weeks ago, we're kicking the plans for September 15th into high gear. Between now and then we will be collecting cards, posters and signboards created by local residents, students and art classes, and then ensuring that these are handed out to area police departments. (Pssst.....we need a lot of cards). See the previous blog post here.

Sergeant Wallace Johnson Mowbray, Maryland State Police

Wednesday 5/16: Remembering Sergeant Wallace Johnson Mowbray, End of Watch: August 10th, 1975. Sergeant Wallace Mowbray was shot and killed during a traffic stop near Chester, Maryland. He was checking a license plate over the radio when he was struck by a shotgun blast. The license plates turned out to be stolen and two of the four occupants had warrants out for their arrest. All four suspects fled from the scene. Two suspects, who were later convicted of doing the shooting, kidnapped a couple in Chester, took their car, and raped the woman. They were captured several hours later. The other two suspects stole a boat and headed toward the Western Shore. They were captured two days later.

Follow-up to "Thank A Police Officer Day on Delmarva" - A Community Project

Update from last weekend ~ I'm still collecting pictures and names and looking for photos but wanted to post and acknowledge some of the many people who were involved in Saturday's Thank a Police Officer Day on Delmarva.

The last few days leading up to September 17th were pretty awesome to see. The generosity of so many people, local businesses and organizations was incredible and it seemed as if as folks find out how to get involved, the more people join in. It was, from beginning to end, a true community effort.

Four-footed Officers of Delmarva (Part 3)

"Turn the town Blue" | May 16th in Georgetown, Delaware

On a cool Monday night in May, citizens, local residents and members of law enforcement gathered together on Georgetown's historic Circle. We came out to show that we care; to say thank you to local officers; to make a stand and show that we are here to back our men and women of the police departments.

It was a grassroots kind of thing, meaning I didn't catch anything in the paper about it and other than this signage on the fire department down the street it appeared to be all word of mouth. And yet people came out, wearing sweatshirts and baseball caps that showed they were here for their law enforcement, bringing signs and flags and offering thanks to the officers present.

Did we forget so soon?

Today's interaction, although small, to me seemed to speak volumes. When I thought it over a couple of hours later, I felt it showed that support for our law enforcement still isn't front and center in many places. It surprised me to hear the officer say "we don't see that much around here" - almost as if that way of life has become accepted. I hate that - I hate they are out there doing jobs that many of us couldn't do - and it's become the norm to see so little respect or appreciation?? I'm grateful that he took the time to tell me it mattered - but wish it wasn't so rare for them to notice that people care. I wish we as a society had begun to shift in that new direction that it seemed we leaned towards just a few months ago during Thank a Police Officer Day and again on January 9th. But it didn't last - and it sure seems that we owe them a hell of a lot more respect than what they are seeing....still.

Since Saturday night I've scrolled through my Facebook feed full of comments and condolences; seen images tinged with blue and black fade in and out across Instagram; watched the short and impartial news clips on tv. There's that quote about how when we lose an officer it's not just a department, it's a nation that feels that loss. Today, that is once again, painfully clear.

We mourn together.

This is not an incident isolated to a specific area. Everyone who believes in what these men and women go out to do every day, each of us with a friend, loved one, spouse and neighbor who serves and protects; we feel the same sadness too. Whether you lived in Virginia or know a police officer or simply stand with law enforcement, in some way, we are all connected to each of these tragedies.

I don't remember when we stopped caring about the people who do a job that few can. Maybe I missed how things have become or the way issues and politics and causes fueled by celebrities have divided us. Surely I wasn't paying attention when it became mainstream to declare a war on authority, disrespect authority and run wild with so little regard for one another. To me certain people deserve respect because they have earned it but in a world full of entitlement it seems that few feel the same.

As someone who grew up just minutes from where the events of Saturday night unfolded, I'm connected. And angry. And fed up. But mostly, tonight, I'm sad for a family and a department and a society which has turned into something that no longer stands for what is right.

We mourn together.
