January 18th, 2020 | Farewell, Officer Spencer Wiersberg

Today, as we prepare to say goodbye to Officer Spencer Wiersberg, I tried to think of some words to say. It seemed fitting to acknowledge some of the beautiful things which have been written about him, reflect perhaps on his charisma and spirit, or try to offer some phrases or a quote of comfort for the family.

After giving it much thought over the past week, I have none of that. No beautiful photos to share or cherished memories or highlights of Officer Wiersberg's life; no inspired words with which to observe this day. Just a tiny, almost insignificant mark, a symbol illustrating a beginning and an ending, a wordless tribute to the minutes in between and the lives touched forever. It is this, the simple, almost unnoticeable mark representing time and moments between birth and death, representing the character and depth of one's life and impact. It is a million things which made hundreds of people write words about this young man in the past week; it is simply, a life lived to inspire.

As you all now know, whether from personal connections to the Wiersberg family, or as an outsider reading Spencer's obituary, there were simply too many such moments to count.
